New England has a long standing Christian tradition that, while not as strict as orthodox Muslim culture, solicits a bit more modesty when out in public than is common in places like Florida or California.

It's not unusual for the shirts to come off while playing in the sprinklers or having a quick game of pick-up basketball or frolicking on the beach.

On days like the one we had for this event, I think the main concern keeping the shirts on people was sunburn - it was a scorcher, and most people (likely because their minds weren't on going to the beach) didn't bring sunscreen. A number of the other vendors left in "lobster mode" at the end of the day, even though they were in the shade provided by their canopies.

Having experienced that pain myself on several occasions, I've made it a habit to keep a large tube of SPF 30 in my accessory bag. :)

Great photos and warm feelings! I was disappointed there aren't any boys without their shirts on - Is it a strict Muslim community? I have a video on YouTube that includes a boy without his shirt on, so I hope it doesn't disturb anybody in your neck of the woods!

I wish I had seen this post a couple of weeks ago ... although saying that you really did help me with those quotes you sent me. I really agree with on basically all aspects of this blog. Sometimes though I have to become a bit more grounded .... you see one of my weaknesses is being a people pleaser (in life) .. I have to not let this come into my photography too. Really pleased our paths crossed.

Hi Rich,

Both you and Karen make some wonderful statements. While we live in a world that is very judgemental and opinionated, it is sad that we're not collectively able to allow people the freedom to express there creativity. Here is to hoping that with the passage of time that opinions seem to become more aligned with a socially acceptable society. In the meantime, please keep creating the great work you always do.

Thank you for your kind words, Karen.

It's gratifying to know that someone besides myself actually takes the time to read my blog. :D

I learned a long time ago (in the 1st grade, to be exact) that there is a great deal of wisdom in following the assertion of Andre Gide that it is better to be hated for what you are, than loved for what you are not.

I think the world would be a better, more peaceful place if more people lived that thought.

Rich,

You speak of an area that most would not dare. And for that, you gain much respect. And anyone that takes the time to get to know you, you are a unique photographer. And you are the first one to say that your photography is not for everyone. But there are some that appreciate the work you do and by building those relationships, you will gain the trust of many to build your business and continue with the satisfaction to yourself that your work brings.
